He was called to the Bar by Gray’s Inn 1972 (Bencher 2002). He practised from 5 Essex Court, Temple, London until 2002. He was appointed assistant recorder 1989, recorder 1993, Queen’s Counsel 1994. His practice centred on criminal law (both prosecuting and defending) in the Crown Court and the Court of Appeal, Criminal Division and on representing police forces in civil cases in the High Court of Justice and in the Country Court.

In July 2002 he was appointed as a permanent senior circuit judge at the Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey), London. He sits for a period each year in the court of Appeal, Criminal Division. He participated in the 5th Regional Workshop for Police Officers, Prosecutors and Judges in South Asia on “Effectively Countering Terrorism”, held in New Delhi, India on 20-22 March 2012 under the auspices of the United Nations and the “Center on Global Counter Terrorism Cooperation”.
