Lt Gen JP Singh (Retd) is the Chief Consultant to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), appointed by the Ministry of Defence.
A third generation army officer, he was commissioned in the Armoured Corps in June 1971 and participated in active combat as a troop leader in the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. The President of India awarded him twice for his Distinguished Service of an Exceptional Order. He retired in 2011 after 40 years of active service.
Lt Gen JP Singh (Retd) has commanded an Armoured Regiment, an Armoured Brigade, Armoured Division, the largest Strike Corps as well as the Armoured Corps School and Centre. He is a specialist in manoeuvre warfare and regarded an expert on defence modernisation, future technologies of Armoured Vehicles, protection, survivability and net enablement of land forces.
During his appointment as the Deputy Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (Perspective Planning and Force Development), he coordinated the Capability Development Plans of the Army, Navy and Air Force. He was the Secretary of the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC). In 2010, he was appointed as the Deputy Chief of Army (Policy and Systems) where he drafted the 15 years Long Term Perspective Plan for the Indian Army and executed all capital and large revenue procurements. He was also involved in drafting the Defence Production Policy to usher in greater self-reliance for India.
Lt Gen JP Singh (Retd) is a post graduate in Military Sciences and an MPhil in Strategic Studies and Higher Defence Management. He attended the Staff College, Senior and Higher Command courses and the National Defence College (NDC) course in India. He has taught in the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC), India and led the team to Zambia to teach students of nine Southern African countries in Command and Staff Planning.
